Casa Heliconia offers boutique luxury accommodation in Kaleliya, just 40km from Colombo and 25km from the Bandaranaike Airport. Located on the edge of a rural community and surrounded by plantations, it is conveniently located between Colombo and Kandy in the Western Province.
Book your stay in Temple Angkor which has a spacious airy bedroom, a generous king-size bed and a selection of Cambodian-themed antiques. Colourful fabrics give the room a delightfully tropical atmosphere along with the draped mosquito nets, fans and air-conditioning. The room has an ensuite WC and basin and a separate shower with copper fittings. Temple Angkor has an adjoining kitchen with refrigerator, private dining terrace, open fireplace and BBQ. Luggage space, lamps and an iPod dicking station complete this boutique accommodation.
Slightly smaller than Temple Angkor, Pagoda Gold is a similarly furnished pavilion with a covered dining terrace, chaise lounge and planters’ chairs for relaxing. The bedroom has a huge king-size bed, iPod docking station, luggage space and bedside lamps. The separate shower room has unusual copper fittings.
Both rooms have access to the Pavilion Neapolitan with loungers overlooking the paddy fields and infinity-edge pool.
The Doll’s House is a shared sitting room with air-conditioning, home theatre including a 42 inch TV, DVD player, computer and music. It is an area for reading, writing, relaxing and socializing on the comfy sofas in the evening.
Breakfast is available from the menu and includes delicious tropical fruits, eggs cooked to your liking and Sri Lankan specialities. Lunch is a choice of salads and light dishes while dinner may include seafood, meat or vegetarian curries followed by a selection of sweet desserts.
Each of the private pavilions has its own dining area, BBQ and kitchen but guests can opt to have delicious meals prepared by local staff.
The peaceful oasis “Dolpotha” is a place to relax and sunbathe, meditate or perhaps enjoy a massage by a local masseur surrounded by jungle and paddy fields. Local masseurs are trained in Ayurvedic techniques and offer massages in the private outdoor area. It’s the next best thing to a spa!
Local trips will reveal rural life in Sri Lanka with small temples, villages, markets and agricultural farmland surrounding Casa Heliconia. Cadjugama is the neighbouring cashew nut village where you can buy many different flavours of cashews to nibble or take home as a gift.
The nearby village of Wewaldeniya specialises in making cane baskets and coir mats. You should also sample their thalagulis which are made from sesame seeds and palm honey.
Carved out of the rock and covered in frescoes, the Waruna Temple is well worth a visit. Climb to the roof of the three-storey structure to see magnificent surrounding views.
The lakeside city of Kandy has many attractions including the Temple of the Tooth Relic and the Royal Botanical Gardens, just an hour’s drive away.
