Ambalama offers all the comforts of staying at the luxury beach home of a well-heeled aunt, complete with pool and personal chef!
Ambalama is the Singhalese word meaning “resting place” which aptly described the atmosphere of this beachfront private villa. Whether you are travelling as a couple or with a group of family and friends, the architect-designed Ambalama villa offers the ultimate accommodation. Book the entire private villa or an individual room to suit your requirements.
Located just 7km southwest of the historic city of Galle, Ambalama combines a private beachside villa retreat with the opportunity to enjoy many cultural, historic and wildlife experiences. The property is right on the beautiful Dahawella Beach where stilt fishermen still practice their traditional art. The Bandaranaike Airport is about 2 to 2½ hours away by car.
The four luxuriously appointed suites at Ambalama all have ocean views through french doors that lead directly down to the lawned terrace and beach. The villa is divided, with two suites at either end of the villa giving visitors a measure of self-contained privacy. Three of the bedrooms have king-size beds while the fourth is a twin bedded room. Rooms have air-conditioning for those who do not wish to enjoy the gentle sea breezes wafting over them. Guests can sleep soundly on the comfortable four poster beds beneath the draped mosquito nets cooled by ceiling fans. Ensuite bathrooms are attached to each bedroom and include twin vanities and showers, two of which offer the chance to shower outdoor, yet in complete privacy.
Along with four double bedrooms, Ambalama offers a spacious living and dining area for guests. It opens out onto a lawned terrace overlooking an inviting infinity pool which benefits from fabulous ocean views. The pool area is comfortably furnished with chairs and loungers and the beachside Ambalama pavilion is the perfect place for reading or watching the sunset in comfort. Local masseurs can be booked and offer a range of massage therapies in the privacy of your own suite. This relaxing retreat has no TV, but visitors can stay in touch with Wi-Fi internet access. There is also an iPod docking station for you to enjoy your own choice of music. The resident chef is on hand to create wonderful meals to suit your requirements and the house boys provide personal waiter service. They are happy to BBQ fresh fish from the local market, prepare locally caught lobsters or create international and Sri Lankan dishes, served at a time to suit your wishes. Security is provided by a night watchman.
Day trips should include the nearby UNESCO-listed city of Galle with its narrow streets, ancient fort, museum, churches and small shops. The cricket ground hosts many test matches in what is a Sri Lankan passion. Those wanting to enjoy the offshore reef will find many opportunities for snorkelling and diving trips from Unawatuna Beach. Surfers can also enjoy the waves at certain points along the south coast such as Midigama, about 20 minutes’ drive from Ambalama. You may be lucky enough to see turtles laying their eggs in the sand close to the villa. Alternatively take a trip to a nearby Turtle Hatchery and see their conservation efforts to protect the eggs and give these endangered creatures the best possible chance of survival. The chance to see elephants, leopards, sloth bears and sambar deer is within easy reach at the Uda Walawe National Park and the Yala National Park.
